The HireVue stage consists of just two video-recorded questions, each with 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to respond. While BlackRock has varied these questions over time, the key focus remains on the firm’s five core principles, which are used to assess candidates at every stage of the process.
Candidates who pass the HireVue are invited to two live virtual interviews, each lasting 45 minutes, with members of the Private Markets team, typically ranging from Associates to Vice Presidents. These assess:
Technical knowledge & commercial awareness – Expect discussions on private markets, recent deals, and BlackRock’s strategic growth in private equity, infrastructure, and private credit.
Fit & behavioral alignment with BlackRock’s culture – Strong focus on the five core principles and how candidates demonstrate them in their experiences.
In short, successful candidates are those who combine strong technical knowledge, commercial awareness, and alignment with BlackRock’s principles, positioning themselves as future leaders in private equity, private credit, and infrastructure investing.
How to Pass the HireVue Stage - Interview with a 2025 Successful Candidate:
The BlackRock HireVue invite can take a while to arrive, sometimes weeks after applications close, so don’t be discouraged if you hear others getting theirs before you. It’s rolled out in patches, which means that not receiving it right away doesn’t signal rejection.
The HireVue itself is short: just two video-recorded questions, each with 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to answer. Because the format is so concise, your responses need to be focused, structured, and reflective of what BlackRock values most. In my experience, the questions weren’t technical. They leaned more toward motivation and behavioral aspects; I think the key to performing well is to show a clear alignment with the culture and purpose of the firm.
BlackRock’s identity is rooted in long-term thinking, responsibility to clients, and the drive to deliver performance with integrity. When answering, it helps to subtly bring these ideas across. From what I heard candidates who do well often bring a clear understanding of the firm’s direction, while bringing in a bit of their own story of ownership, collaboration, or anything that falls along those lines.
As with any HireVue, keep eye contact with the camera throughout your answer. The system apparently tracks facial expressions and engagement, and even if the extent of that is unclear, it won’t hurt to appear confident and focused. With only two chances to speak, everything from your structure to your delivery really matters, I can’t stress that enough.
